I picked up a new Apple Remote today, and I’m pleasantly surprised at its construction. I know it’s just a remote with fewer buttons than some mice, but Apple went all unibody with it. No joke: besides the three button areas on the top, the battery door on the bottom, and the IR transmitter, it doesn’t have a single glued seam or screw. It’s a unibody Apple Remote.
Go cheap or free, and you invite nimrods with unrealistic expectations who didn’t have to earn the software. They didn’t have to make the decision to spend money on it, so they don’t respect the work that went into it.
Make quality software, charge a reasonable price, and you’ll get quality customers.

A quote from Toshiba states that the company doesn’t see much potential for the form factor, but it’s hopping on board out of fear of being left behind.
What a great reason to make a product, and what an assuring sign that the company is motivated to make said product great.
Ben Gold is making a TextMate bundle for designing Tumblr themes
Excellent. I might even poke around with it eventually, though don’t count on me for the “high quality” bit.
This new version of SmileOnMyMac’s time-saving text snippet tool gains faster tools, search, more powerful options for customizing snippets on the fly, and easier ways to sync one’s snippet library…
What is Microsoft Visio? Honest question.
My wife is job hunting, and one position encourages having experience with Microsoft Visio. I’ve never used it, so I tracked down Microsoft’s product page. The punchline in dire need of a joke that you see above is what I found.
Besides a small thumbnail on the right that I originally passed over because it looked like a three-word Google AdSense spot, there isn’t a single sentence on this page that answers my question. Not one. In fact, the first thing my eye gravitated towards was the shopping cart in the middle, which I’m sure makes some dingbat Microsoft exec feel like he wielded his ill-deserved power over a stifled web design department. Good boy.
kung fu grippe: Entitled to Care
Bullshit.
Most people don’t give a crap about where they get their laughs or information, so long as it’s free. “Because so many things on the Internet are free, everything else should be free.” They don’t want to see ads, don’t want to donate, won’t subscribe, don’t want to click something to magically generate a free penny that goes into a tip jar. In fact, there seems to be a growing collective distaste for the idea of you making money at all.
I admire Mr. Mann for spending tons of cash on the things that he loves. I often do the same. Most people don’t and—thanks to the current culture of the Internet—won’t.
This isn’t about some brave new world of change, and it’s not a revolutionary new business model that “old media” is trying to kick, scream, and blindly run away from. It’s pure, nihilistic, fucking entitlement.
Some people get to make great stuff on the Internet and make a name for themselves. Someone in a position of power gets a glint in their eye, and then these people get offers to speak around the country or get a job at an established company doing what they did in their garage for free. That’s awesome for them. Truly.
But what works for some people, or some companies, doesn’t work for others. The only revolution here is that people are turning a blinder eye in greater masses than ever to this essential fact of life.
It’s entitlement, and it’s bullshit.
No, Apple most certainly does not.
I really hope ICANN doesn’t cave to a bunch of misguided religious nuts again. The .xxx TLD would make it easier for parents, schools, and businesses who want to avoid or filter porn to do exactly that, while not impeding folks who want to find it. It’s a win-win for everyone.
kung fu grippe: Three things about Marco Arment
Bingo.
It cannot be stated much more clearly than this.
