Xmarks (previously Foxmarks) has introduced a “bring your own server” (BYOS) edition. Instead of keeping your encrypted bookmarks and (optionally) password data on Xmarks’ servers, you can now sync with your own if you pay for a hosting plan with an outfit like DreamHost.
Xmarks BYOS edition is different from the standard Firefox, Safari, and IE version in a few ways. Specifically, it does not require any of Xmarks’ Discovery features and will be upgraded “much less frequently.”
Still, the option to sync this stuff with one’s own server will surely be appealing to those with security concerns. It’s great to see Xmarks blaze this kind of trail.
