Ben Gold is making a TextMate bundle for designing Tumblr themes
Excellent. I might even poke around with it eventually, though don’t count on me for the “high quality” bit.
kung fu grippe: Three things about Marco Arment
Bingo.
Yet another esteemed designer switches to Tumblr.
If you’re looking to switch from WordPress to Tumblr like I just did, this script by Darshan Bavaria might help. Note: I didn’t use this script, so I can’t help you with it; I didn’t have much at my WordPress site that I was worried about losing so I just nuked it.
Darshan’s script can even convert your WordPress comments to Disqus comments (which many Tumblr themes natively support; check Customize > Appearance). You just need a web host that runs PHP5, and you’ll only have to run this script once. Then, if everything works, you’re all set to go with Tumblr. Good luck.
Now that Tumblr does pages, I’ve set the service to replace WordPress at my main davebc.com domain. I moved the site from the blog subdomain, and an htaccess file should take care of any existing direct post links. If you find anything broken, though, please let me know. This also means that the RSS feed has changed from feeds.feedburner.com/1fps to /davebc. I’m using Feedburner’s redirect option for the next 30 days, but please update your readers accordingly. Sorry for the inconvenience.
I’ve been waiting for Tumblr to do pages almost since I discovered it three years ago. The service is certainly missing some features from “everything-and-the-kitchen-sink” platforms like WordPress, but it has plenty of unique features that simply aren’t found elsewhere, and a tremendous amount of style that has yet to be imitated with any success. I love that you can ask me a question, and Tumblr’s theme directory has amassed quite a collection of themes with diverse layouts, personalities, and features (including Disqus comments and lots of social service integration). I also don’t have to worry about MySQL, PHP, or any of that other hippie crap anymore, which is quite relieving.
Tumblr is my favorite blogging service on the market by a mile, and its fantastic iPhone app is delightful icing on the cake. With the introduction of pages, it’s become my favorite blogging and website service.
Tumblr reblogs of entire posts always kinda felt like wholesale theft (something I wrote a letter about a while ago). Now tumblr is adjusting how the button works, and I think it’s a great improvement to the culture and practice of blogging here. If a post is longer than 500 characters, it will be reblogged as a link with a short snippet. Very good, though I’d like to see that character count lowered to 300.
Tumblr now does Dashboard replies.
They’re on another roll with new features. This one lets the people you follow on Tumblr reply to your posts from within the Tumblr Dashboard. Enable it under Customize > Advanced.
Go turn it on. Go on, git. Now, who’s working on that iPhone app?
I wish we could upload photos and videos from Tumblr’s bookmarklet. Having to visit the site just to do this is annoying.
Tumblr: boasts some great stats and a new feature
Tumblr had some awesome stats last month, including 50 million unique visitors and 5,000 new users every day. Fantastic, congrats guys.
Mashable also has the scoop on a new feature that apparently debuts today: Tumblupon. Great idea.
I was browsing 1FPS on my iPhone and noticed that my Flash gallery post of a digicam comparison doesn’t just disappear. Tumblr gracefully degrades it to simply list each photo in order. This is a great way to handle mobile devices like the iPhone that I hope never have to suffer the scourge of Flash.E
Tumblr staff: Now testing automatic post recovery
Tumblr will now capture the latest version of your post while you’re drafting. When your browser crashes (yes, not if, but when), the most recent version will be waiting when you log back in. Anyone know if this works for the bookmarklet?
Tumblr staff: A summer showcase of Tumblr musicians
A very cool idea to show off the best in musical talent among Tumblr users. Submit your band by July 22nd.

What is not mentioned, however, is whether we can attach multiple photos to an email to create a photoset in a single post. That sure would be handy considering that iPhone OS 3.0 finally allows composing just such an email.
