Choice quotes:
In a 9-3 decision, the court placed new limits on “business method” patents not tied to any particular machine or physical transformation of matter.
and:
The court’s newfound skepticism about business method patents will almost certainly translate into increased scrutiny of software patents as well.
Finally, a glimmer of sense returns to our broken patent system.

Obama’s first interview since being elected. Also the first time I’ve seen less buzz-speak, more real questions and answers. One of my favorite quotes is part of Obama’s observation on our energy problems:
This has been our pattern: we go from shock to trance. Oil prices go up, gas prices at the pump go up, everybody goes into a flurry of activity. And then the prices go back down, and suddenly we act like it’s not important, we start filling up our SUVs again, and we never make any progress. […] Now is the time to break it.
Obama isn’t kidding. According to Autoblog, $4 per gallon gas prices caused truck sales to drop below 10 percent of US vehicle sales in May and June, and SUVs were down to 1.9 percent of sales. Now that gas prices are back down around an average of $2.78 per gallon, trucks went back up to 14.1 percent, and SUVs are at 2.5. This country’s vehicle buyers have the attention span of a 6 year-old on his first trip to Disney World.

Ben touches on an intriguing problem that could arise as soon as the Wii 2 and Playstation 4. Right now, manufacturers build consoles at a loss and make it up in the sales and fees for games and accessories. Retailers sell said consoles on razor-thin margins, which explains the popular bundle packages.
As game sales increasingly go digital (Exhibit A: Steam, WiiWare, XBLA), how do you motivate retailers to sell the next generation of consoles?
This really bums me out. Vimeo’s site and player are gorgeous, and its video quality has always beat YouTube’s hands down. But this clause in Vimeo’s TOS goes over my line of legal tiptoeing into user hostility, and I have sadly closed my account.
I bet this is one of the most significant reasons why Hulu wants to keep you watching in a browser instead of on a traditional TV, at least for now: Complete site takeover ads.
I love Hulu’s takeover ads. Can’t really do that with TV, can you?
Can’t do it on Boxee, either. Again, at least, for now.

This isn’t the most exemplary quote, but regardless: find me someone to kill so that I may write pieces like this.
